Two drivers hospitalised following M9 collision involving fire

A collision between a lorry and a car occurred on the M9 motorway in County Kildare this evening.

The incident occurred shortly before 5pm between junctions 3 and 4 northbound.

The lorry is believed to have overturned and caught fire. The drivers of each vehicle were taken by ambulance to hospital.

Two units of Carlow County Fire Services attended the scene from Carlow Town with two fire appliances (CW11A1 and CW11A2), it's Emergency Tender (CW11B1), Water Tanker (CW11K1) and the Motorway Response Unit.

A fire crew from Kildare Fire Service attended from Athy with its frontline appliance (KE13A1) and their Emergency Tender (KE13B1). The Rostered Senior Fire Officer (RSFO) from both counties were also summoned to the scene by the Eastern Regional Control Centre in Dublin..

Both lanes on the motorway were closed and emergency services from counties Kildare and Carlow attended the scene.

Gardaí turned back vehicles from the northbound lane to the Carlow/Castledermot junction while vehicles travelling on the south bound lane were also diverted from Junction 3, Athy/Ballitore junction.

There are heavy delays on the M9 exiting junction 4 Castledermot as gardaí from Carlow and Kildare managed diverted traffic.

Heavy lifting vehicles from Portlaosie, Co. Laois are at the scene awaiting clearance to lift both vehicles from the scene.
