The incident happened at around 10pm when gardaí responded to reports a series of burglaries in the Lismore, Tallow and Fermoy areas along the Waterford-Cork border.
Gardaí believe the garda car was deliberately rammed by the gang members in an attempt to evade being stopped and arrested.
The garda was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he is expected to remain for observation. His injuries are not life threatening.
The gang fled the scene following the collision. Gardai have confirmed this to be the third time in a month in which a vehicle used by a gang linked to burglaries the Cork-Waterford-Tipperary region has escaped from gardai at high speed.
