The NDRS is a purpose-built secure digital mobile radio network developed, using Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA technology) to meet the needs of our Security, Fire & Safety, Health, Government & Public Service agencies.
TETRA currently operates for An Garda Síochána, HSE, National Ambulance Service and the Irish Coast Guard. They are also currently rolling-out to all Fire Services and they also provide the service to the Voluntary Emergency Services.
Another main focus of TETRA concentrates on lone workers within the public sector and they are dealing with more Local Authority’s around Ireland, not only from a communication aspect but from a lone worker point of view too, such as roads, water, housing, public parks or traffic and community wardens. TETRA offers a secure instant communication with their work colleagues and they provide a 24-hour managed emergency response service which is activated by an emergency button on the radio unit or a lot of the radios offer a ‘man down’ button also.

Will Walsh, Sales Account Manager at Tetra Ireland outlines to Emergency Times how it works. “If you have a lone worker out in the middle of the night or even during the day for example, and that person needs an instant response or assistance to an incident or emergency, the alert will come into our TETRA Emergency Response Call Centre and this alert will be dealt with by that operator. If they require the emergency services, we have a direct line to ECAS – Emergency Call Answering Service, so the call is somewhat triaged before they respond to it. If there is no response from the person and it is a genuine ‘man-down’, we activate a pre-agreed escalation procedure, which has been provided to us by each service user, so this is very bespoke to the individual lone worker.”
As the world’s leading secure digital radio technology, TETRA was selected by the Government as the preferred platform for the NDRS. It is the global benchmark for secure, resilient, mission-critical communications, and is governed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
The NDRS is government mandated to provide superior security, coverage in even the most rural areas, greater resilience and unlike traditional networks a TETRA network can also enable simultaneous interoperation between multiple agencies on a single platform.
TETRA Ireland’s NDRS network provides unique benefits to professional mobile radio users who require rapid, secure, dependable one-to-one and one-to-many radio communication. It offers its users best-in-class network coverage throughout the country. It differs greatly from mobile phone network’s which focus primarily on population coverage.

The NDRS is a purpose-built, stand-alone network delivering 98% overlapping land mass coverage which encompasses building and land areas regardless of population concentration.
Uniquely it also provides Air-Ground-Air coverage giving fixed and rotary wing aircraft excellent communications and a wide area communication which includes Ireland’s islands & up to 20kms off-shore.
The radio units differ slightly, some are feature rich more than others, but they all offer the same level of coverage and resilience around the country.
