Senior gardaí thank ‘Covid’ probationers in Laois/Offaly Division

Sixteen probationary gardaí assigned to the Laois/Offaly Garda Division were presented with their official garda badges today.

The gardaí were among 319 student gardaí deployed from the Garda Training College in Templemore on March 20th to garda stations across the country to help officers on the frontline during the fight to combat Covid-19.

The early-attested gardaí were initially assigned to station duties but over the past few weeks and months and some have received practical ‘on street’ and ‘in the community’ training during this time while being observed and supervised by their tutors and instructors which include gardaí, sergeants and inspectors.



At a special ceremony for the 16 gardaí assigned to the Laois/Offaly division held at Portlaosie Garda Station today, Chief Superintendent John Scanlan thanked the gardaí for their ‘commitment, professionalism and dedication’ during the crisis.

The probationers are stationed in Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Portarlington County Laois and in Tullamore, Edenderry, Clara and Birr County Offaly.

Meanwhile, in the Tullamore District, Superintendent Tom Malarkey, on behalf of his colleagues and fellow officers, thanked the public this week for their sympathy and support following the recent tragic death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

Supt. Malarkey acknowledged the outpouring of sympathy and support offered to him and his officers which had come from the wider community in the past two weeks.
