Limerick Fire Service were carrying out routine checks on the water at around 10am in their ‘FireSwift’ Rescue boat when they discovered the upturned boat on the Abbey River. Four female rowers were assisted by the Swift Water Rescue Crew. Three of the rowers were rescued by the SWRT crew and a fourth was trapped under the boat and in a critical condition.

Four crews from Limerick City Fire Service and the Limerick Marine Search and rescue Service and the Irish Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter from Shannon were also involved in the incident. The helicopter was stood down shortly after the callout.

Firefighters had to cut the girls hair to free her before delivering CPR to her.
