At a Government Press conference this afternoon, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar outlined a number of measures in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland.

The Cabinet approved various emergency measures in the Public Interest Covid Bill, which during the duration of the emergency, one measure will see a framework agreement with the Private Hospitals who will operate effectively as Pubic Hospitals under Section 38 of the Health Act.

This will add over 2000 beds, 9 laboratories, critical care capacities, and thousands of staff to the health service.

Public and private patients will be treated equally, and private hospitals have agreed to do this on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis’. The Taoiseach said 'these are unprecedented actions to respond to an unprecedented emergency'. He thanked the hospitals for their cooperation and understanding during this time.
