A Garda and fire service investigation is underway in North Cork following and extensive fire which destroyed a secondary school overnight.

Emergency Services were alerted to the fire at around 3.20am at the Patrician Academy School in Mallow. Nearby houses were evacuated due the intensity of the blaze and some roads remain closed by Gardai.

Five Units of the fire brigade attended the blaze. Cork County Fire Service said fire units from Mallow, Charleville and Kanturk were assisted by units from the City.

The roof and top section of the school was badly damaged but fire fighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other parts of the school.

A Fire Officer told Emergency Times this morning that the fire had affected an extension of the building mostly, while the older side of the school escaped much damage.

Local Parish Priest Fr. Ger Casey said it’s a well known landmark. “The Patrician Brothers were teaching at the school for many years before it was taken over by the Parish. It’s a well known landmark.”
