Minister Varadkar on the planned garda strike

TD Leo Varadkar, Minister for Social Protection has said that people will never look at the gardaí in the same way again if a planned strike goes ahead. The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors announced a sustained campaign of industrial action on Monday which may see over 10,000 rank and file gardsí strike.


Speaking ahead of a Cabinet meeting this morning with the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister Varadkar said while he hopes the strike can be avoided, the meeting was less about contingency plans ad more about resolving the dispute.

Speaking to RTÉ radio this morning, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said the garda should consider, very seriously, their decision to strike, and said he wouldn’t go as far as Minister Varadkar I saying that people would never look at the guards in the same way.
