West Midlands Police have declared a 'major incident' in Birmingham city centre after a number of stabbings.

Police said they responded to reports of a stabbing in Birmingham city centre after which there were a number of other stabbings reported in the area shortly after at 12:30am this morning.

Several people have been injured but police could not say how many or how serious their injuries are.

IN a statement, the West Midlands Police have said "We are aware of a number of injured people, but at the moment we are not in a position to say how many or how serious. Emergency services were working together at the scene and making sure that those who were injured received medical care.”

Police and emergency medical services responded quickly and continue to work together to establish what has happened.

The Police denied there had been any gunshots reported, following comments on social media from members of the public.

They said "The emergency services have well-rehearsed plans for dealing with major incidents. Our response is ongoing in Birmingham city centre and will be for some time. Cordons are in place, and there are some road closures." We're aware of some comments that gunshots were fired, this has not been reported to us at this stage."

An area known as the Gay Village in the city has been cordoned off by Police.
