London Fire Brigade has issued 5,000 fire-fighters in 103 fire stations across London with new uniforms for Community Fire Safety. Previous uniforms are over 20 years old.

The uniform included jacket and sweatshirts, trousers, shirts and a t-shirt. The jacket and shirt comes complete with the LFB crest and logo, making fire-fighters identifiable to members of the public.

In addition to the uniforms being worn when fire fighters are out doing fire prevention work, the uniform is also worn under their protective fire gear when crews are responding to fires and other emergencies.

LFB’s Third Officer Dave Brown said: "As well as responding to emergencies, a really important part of our job is working with London's communities and talking to people about how they can prevent fires from starting in the first place”

"It's really important that the public know what our staff look like when they visit their homes to give fire safety advice and fit smoke alarms. The new work wear uniform not only gives our firefighters a really professional look, it makes them easily identifiable."

To ensure it was up to standard, the new kit underwent rigorous testing to assess its performance under the protective equipment worn by our fire-fighters. This included training in real fire conditions and working with ladders and breathing apparatus.

The delivery programme included 5,000 jackets and sweatshirts, 15,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 shirts and 25,000 T-shirts. Third Officer Dave Brown said that while all jackets and shirts have the London Fire Brigade logo on it, he has advised members of the public if they are visited by a firefighter and you want to verify who they are, ask to see their ID and call the number on it to confirm their identity.
