Kildare Fire Service recruitment drive and information sessions

Kildare Fire Service is seeking to fill several firefighter posts for fire stations in Athy (KE13), Maynooth (KE14), Monasterevin (KE15) and Leixlip (KE16).

Kildare is a retained fire service, which means firefighters are on-call and work on a part-time

Firefighters are paid a retaining fee and a drill fee on a quarterly basis and payment for ‘fire calls’ are made on a fortnightly basis if justified by the amount involved. An attendance at 85% of all drills and training sessions on a quarterly basis is necessary to qualify for a retaining fee. Fire-fighters who do not meet this requirement may lose 50% of Retainer (Annual Leave, Certified Sick Leave and Jury Duty, if not excused, may be valid excuses for absence) while other penalties may also apply.

Firefighters who attend 50% of calls are paid a clothing allowance.

Before being accepted into the fire service, a fire-fighter will be required to pass medical, physical and other examinations which may include cardio-vascular assessment tests. They will also be required to comply fully with the requirements of the 2005 LGMA ‘Occupational Health Scheme for Members of the Retained Fire Service.’ A firefighter may also undertake other examinations as may be deemed necessary by the Chief Fire Officer.

Due to the nature of the role, as part of a firefighter’s appointment, a firefighter is required to qualify as a Breathing Apparatus (BA) Wearer. If he/she does not qualify, for whatever reason, they are removed from the list of qualified Breathing Apparatus Wearer and will be discharged from the fire service.

Fire Fighter recruitment information sessions will be held at the following locations and times:

  • Athy Fire Station                                 16 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

  • Maynooth Fire Station                      14 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

  • Monasterevin Fire Station                21 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

  • Leixlip Fire Station                             20 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

Applicants should be between he ages of 18 years and 50 on recruitment and must retire on reaching the age of 55 years.

If successful, the appointment is probationary for the first twelve months. During this period, the candidate will be required to demonstrate progression in his/her training and will be required to undertake practical tests at regular intervals.
