Garda Commissioner awards Thirteen Scott Medals

Deceased and serving members of An Garda Síochána were awarded with Scott Medals at a special ceremony in Dublin today.

Thirteen Scott Medals including 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 9 Bronze medals were awarded at the ceremony, hosted by the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris at An Garda Síochána Memorial Garden at Dubhlinn Gardens in Dublin Castle.

The Scott Medal is the highest award that can be bestowed by the Commissioner of An Garda Síochána and is awarded for ‘most exceptional bravery and heroism involving the risk of life in the execution of duty’.

The ceremony will take place at the An Garda Síochána Memorial Garden, The Dubhlinn Gardens, Dublin Castle, which honours the members of An Garda Síochána who gave their lives in the service of the State.

The Scott Medals awarded are in relation to:
• Search of IRA training Headquarters, Rathgar Road, 16th August 1940.
Gold Scott Medals was posthumously awarded to Detective Garda Richard Hyland who was killed at the scene, Detective Sergeant Patrick McKeown who died the following day from gunshot wounds received and Detective Garda Michael Brady who survived gunshot wounds. All three members will now be honored along with their colleagues Detective Robert Mulally and Detective Garda Richard Wilmott, who were both previously awarded Gold Scott Medals.

• Release of John O Grady on the 5th November 1987 following kidnap by INLA on 13th October 1987.
A Silver Scott Medal was awarded to Detective Inspector Richard Fahy and a Bronze Scott Medal will be awarded to Detective Garda Brian Coade (retired).

• Arrest of Armed Robbery and Abduction suspects, Mount Oval, Rochestown, Cork, 2nd May 2005.
A Bronze Scott Medals was awarded to Sergeant John McDonagh and Sergeant Joseph Young.

• Armed Robbery, South Circular Road, Dublin 8, 7th December 2009.
A Bronze Scott Medal was awarded to Garda Robert Duffy.

• Arrest of Armed Burglary suspect, Omeath, Co Louth, 18th January 2011.
A Bronze Scott Medal was awarded to Inspector Darren Kirwan.

• Armed Robbery, Bank of Ireland, Rosslare Harbour, 19th August 2016.
Bronze Scott Medals were awarded to Garda Barry Hennessy and Garda Michael Lee.

• Armed Robbery, Braemor Road, Dublin 14, 11th May 2017.
A Bronze Scott Medal was awarded to Detective Garda Andrew Gardiner.

• Disarmament of Armed Male threatening self-harm, Avoca, Co. Wicklow, 15th November 2018.
A Bronze Scott Medal was awarded to Sergeant Pat Carroll.
