Five new firefighters have joined Galway City Fire Station, replacing firefighters who have recently left, mainly due to retirements.

The new recruits bring the numbers of firefighters in the full-time station to 36.

Galway City fire crews are split into four watches and cover a PDA area from the city to Spiddal, to Maam Cross to the West of the Corrib near Corrandulla.

The fire fighters underwent rigorous training and will continue their training and learning of their firefighting career as they progress through the fire service on a day-to-day basis and on their training and drill nights.
