Five arrested as Detective injured and a garda car rammed in Donegal

Gardaí in County Donegal are investigating an incident after a vehicle failed to stop at a Covid-19 checkpoint.

A Detective received injuries during the incident, which happened at around 3.30pm. The injured member was admitted to Letterkenny General Hospital.

Three men and two women were in a car which failed to stop for gardaí before it rammed a garda car a number of times. The car then headed the wrong way around a roundabout on the Donegal to Ballyshannon road.

It is understood the driver and occupants are from Northern Ireland.

The driver absconded from the scene. He was pursued by a detective. A warning shot was fired by the Detective.

The escaped driver continued to run and was later found hiding in a nearby shed. It’s understood the detective received injured to his hand and finger during a struggle to apprehend the suspect. The driver was arrested by gardaí. The detective was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

Gardaí undertook a search of the area as a number of items are believed to have been thrown from the car before they driver fled.

GSOC has been informed of the incident as a shot was discharge fro an official garda weapon.

Ballyshannon gardaí are investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
